Use Word Finder to search for five-letter words by pattern, known letters, endings, and exclusions. Explore possibilities and check tricky words.

Finding the right 5-letter word can become much easier once a few letters or parts of the pattern are known. Word Finder helps turn those clues into a focused list of possible words by letting players enter known letters, required letters, and letters to exclude. The tool is designed for exploring 5-letter words based on specific patterns, making it useful when the general shape of a word is clear but the exact answer has not yet come to mind.

What Is the Word Finder?

Word Finder is a 5-letter word search tool for discovering words that match specific letters, patterns, or positions. The tool can search the full list of 5-letter words by shape, find words with a particular ending or letter pattern, check whether a specific 5-letter word exists, and uncover words that fit a selected group of letters. Rather than serving only as a way to find a puzzle answer, the Finder provides a broader way to explore and discover words based on specific constraints.

How Word Finder Works

Word Finder lets players combine different letter filters to narrow down a list of 5-letter words:

  • Known pattern: Set specific letters in their confirmed positions, with underscores representing unknown spaces.
  • Contains these letters: Find words that include all specified letters somewhere in the word.
  • Starts with and Ends with: Narrow results based on the first or last letters.
  • Exclude letters: Remove words containing any letters that should not appear.

After entering the desired criteria, click “Find words” to see all matching 5-letter words. Word Finder is useful for scouting potential opening words, working through tricky endings, or checking whether a particular word exists.

For example: Players type the word “CRATE” into the grid as the first guess, then receive the clues: R, A, C, T, and E.

  • Fill the received clues into the tool:
    • Known pattern: [_RA_ _]
    • Contains these letters: [CT]
    • Starts with: skip
    • Ends with: skip
    • Exclude letters: [e]
  • Press “Find words” to get a list of possible words. From the list, choose any words to continue the guessing process. The clues players get after each guess will be additionally filled into the tool until the final answer is found.

When to Use Word Finder

Word Finder can be useful whenever a few letter constraints are known, but the exact word is still unclear. Players can:

  • Explore matching words: Find multiple 5-letter words that fit a known pattern, helping reveal possible options instead of focusing on a single answer.
  • Break tricky patterns: Search for candidates when only a few positions remain unknown or when a familiar ending such as -IGHT, -OUND, or -ATCH narrows the possibilities.
  • Scout the next guess: Compare matching candidates and choose a word that could test useful letters or provide new information.
  • Check a word: Confirm whether a 5-letter word fits the known pattern and required letter conditions.
  • Search beyond Wordle: Use Finder as a general 5-letter word lookup for exploring words, patterns, and letter combinations outside the puzzle.

Word Finder focuses on searching 5-letter words using patterns, required letters, and exclusions. Solver is designed specifically around Wordle feedback, using green, yellow, and gray clues to narrow down possible answers.

Yes. The “Starts with” and “Ends with” fields can be used separately or combined with other filters to find words matching a particular pattern.
Is Word Finder free?
Completely. The tool runs directly in the browser with no account or sign-up required.
Can multiple filters be used together?
Yes. Pattern, required letters, starting letters, ending letters, and excluded letters can be combined to make the search more specific.
What happens if no words match the filters?
Players should check the entered pattern, required letters, and excluded letters for conflicts. Removing or adjusting one restriction may reveal matching words.
